Carina and Aron on the Pacific-ocean - New Zealand

Hi,

(Through this website we will continue to update you on any significant events of Arons voyage with Carina.)

The present one:
Aron, as crew on BooBook Fishing Motorship, has arrived yesterday to Nelson, New Zealand.
It was quite an adventurous trip, soon you will be able to read about it in his translated logbook.

Until then, you can see some of his pictures in the new album, New-Zealand (BooBook, Fishing Motorship):

Re: News from Carina and Aron

Hi everyone,

I did really enjoy the "holiday" I spent in New-Zealand,
but now it's time for me to return to Fiji, to my Carina and to work.

I have planned a conventional return by plane, but managed to spice things up,
and hitchhike a sailing boat for the ride back!
She is a 14 year old Beneteau 51, and her name is Shambhala.

Good job that we leave in the morning,
because my visa has expired 5 days ago... whoops!

Regards,
Aron

Re: News from Carina and Aron

Morning Aron. Have followed your pasage for over a year, we have coresponded but I just found this area to submit encouragement.  I build ultra light and sport light aircraft as my hobby but have become Obsessed with sailing and am purchasing a 21' olimpian swing keel, (made in Canada) with cabin features very similar to your carina. my son is also involved and we currently study (he's done) for Tech. Ham radio lience. Our corespondenc has been mostly the mechanical issues that I spot ,Bent mast how's it holding up? youmjust sailed through a heck of a blow  so it surley got an addiquite beating! Mounting the motor, I didn't see a backup securing cable don't give it the chance to fall off:(
I'm happy you're on the ocean again, safe travels come sail the great lakes sometime, tom gahan

Re: News from Carina and Aron

Morning Tom,
Thank you the adivces.
I use a nice red backup securing cable, but maybe this was not in the photos.
Bent mast: very difficult to explain, but normaly I agree with you, but my case is special.
Later, I will write more about my mast in my logbook:)
Peace and wind!
Aron

Re: News from Carina and Aron

Morning Aron, looking at latest pic's you really hit the third world:). I don't recall reading what shots you took before you started? what personnel health concerns do you have? Saw the new sailing cloths quite a while ago
they were needed! Noticed on mount for Solar panels that break looked like Corrosion issue  but I have a feeling you got the heck beat out of you on this passage and the momentium of that much mass was more than the fabrication could take, you're lucky the wind Generator didn't tear loose as well. stay safe hope weather and waves are in your favor .Tom Gahan

Aron's massage on 2008.08.29. 07:27:47 ( translation)

Hi,
I've arrived to Thursday Island (which is at the end of the Torres Strait) yesterday afternoon.
Conform to the local rules, if I use my anchor, I have to enter here officially into Australia.

The end of the Torres is the most dangerous part of the Strait,
because the current here could reach 7 knots and there are lots of reefs.
It is very important to schedule the start conform to the tide-tables.
The place where I'm anchoring is quite bad, it's open and already I've slipped once.
That's an other danger because of the reefs nearby.
The reason: because of the strong winds (25-30 knots) there are big waves, plus the currents...

I plan to continue my route tomorrow towards Darwin.

Best whishes,
Aron

Re: News from Carina and Aron

Morning, hope you're weather is as pleseant as ours . see that you have gotten close to Australia, looking forward to hearing how well boats systems are holding together, No need to respond will follow log as you progress. Fair weather and gentel wind Tom Gahan

Carina and Aron in Australia - Darwin

Aron's massage on 2008.09.09. 06 UTC ( translation)

I've dropped my anchor today at 01:30 in Frances Bay (Darwin) near the yacht Balaton.
I've started to sail 19 years ago on the Lake Balaton, so I've felt myself at home...
On the other site was anchoring my Canadian friend's yacht (Africo) and Boo (from Norway).
There are everywhere known yachts and friends.

My arrival wasn't carefree as usual, I had only a 25 years old small scale map,
the marinas or anchorage places weren't figured on that.
After 3 hours of searching a proper place, I've just decided to stop at Navy smile
Meantime I've talked with the custom (channel 16),
they gave me the coordinates of an anchorage place close to me.
In the port there are very strong currents, because the tides there are about 5 m.

I'm going to stay in Australia (Darwin) 1-2 weeks, I have a lot of repairs to do,
and the next seas are more and more heavy...

Peace and fair winds,
CARINA & Aron

Re: News from Carina and Aron

Morning Aron , was happy to see update on Pic's when I turned on Computer this morning, Looks like you had company on the last pasage (big Bird) The new camera ( I think you had to replace the last one) shows poorly on this web site , But it could be just the transmission to compact the corespondence.
The weather looks pretty Gloomy ,Grey and cloudy. Will be looking forward to hearing about needed repairs. I may be getting my little boat this weekend sold small ford tractor (1957,) If customer picks it up this weekend I'll be sailing before you know it,(sailing season is fading fast winter will be upon us before you know it .Safe journeys.
