Part 9  -  March 3, 2008 – March 22, 2008-04-13

(Translated from Hungarian by Pali)

„Nobody’s monopoly is Buddha, no one has a copyright on Him. This is the most inner truth of everybody. You do not have to be a buddhist, to be Buddha. Buddha’s existence stands over all religions: it is the birthright of everyone. Allow to permeate your everyday deeds, this way it will become meditation, mercy, beauty and blessing in your life”

March 3, 2008. (Day 526)

In case somebody wants to buy a boat, look up a basic link: www.yachtworld.com.

During a big storm the boat can be damaged. The sails, the mast and the stationary lines are the most frequent wind casualties. The damages to the hull and other structural items are caused by the waves – the sea, the repair of those can be very complicated.  The main sources of these are the tall waves and the storm.

Scrubbed and painted the boat the whole day.

According to some, his best book is: One Earth One Humanity.

Lots of people asking me, where do I sleep. In the ship, naturally. My ship is my home, has only one cabin which is really a bed.  Simple life.

Evening: film in the Club, then film on the ship: Macbeth – a modern adaptation. Evening reading by Sever Ganonsky: Comes The Man.

March 4, 2008 (Day 527)

„.....if you have seen once the light of unconscious, if you once stepped out from the cave of the unconscious mind, you will be surprised to find that what you have known till now are all untrue, because they were only the shadows of reality.  As you become conscious, the transformaton of your life will not  the only thing that will happen.  You will immediately be active in a new mode also, you will help others in the transformation. As soon you will see the light, you will want to share it with others.”

Scrubbing and painting the ship before noon.

Went to town in the afternoon because received an e-mail from Asco Motors informing me that the part arrived for my ship motor. Since David is my motor mechanic, I got a larger discount – I paid FD50 only. Bargained with David and his son Dan – reduced the cost of the motor repair to FD90. Will replace the motor parts together on Thursday at noon.

Purchases:

Medicine;

Vitamin powders;

2 shorts (FD2 for each) – this is the first time during my sailing of buying clothes;

Ordered 4 liters of algae killer (FD63).

Evening: Sean Connery films, then Gerhard invited me for beer drinking on his ship named: Baloo 1.

He is sailing with his wife, Elisabeth for a few years now.  Started out of Croatia and their goal is to circumnavigate the Globe – as mine.  Their web site: www.Baloo1.at.

March 5, 2008 (Day 528)

Went to swim in the pool, it is 254 steps from Carina. I am there virtually every day.

Many people wrote to me that they want to buy a boat and want to sail as well. I am encouraging them vigorously, encouragement is wahat they need in the first place. Have some useful advices in connection with a boat purchase. This is my subjective opinion J:

1.   In my opinion, the speed of the boat is of secondary importance – it is important though, that it

      should be strongly built;

2.   Again, in my opinion the new/beutiful look is unimportant, the boat should be simple and

      uncomplicted, lending itself to easy overview (for instance, the electronics in some boats are

      overcomplicated to the point that troubleshooting and repair requires a lot of time and labor);

3.   Selection of the boat depends on what the boat is going to be used for;

3.1 One can find harbors on the sea within 300-400 nautical miles;

3.2 Ocean crossings (2000-3000 nautical miles sailing without stopping);

3.3 Circumsailing (minimum 30.000 nautical miles of sailing);

3.4 Circumsailing (Cape Horn without Cape of Good Hope, 25.000 nautical miles of sailing, most

       of it around the „screaming fourties”.

The majority of the sailors find the charter sailboats inadequate for around-the-Earth voyage due to their weak construction. In my opinion, however, there are some well-built charter sailing ships too which are becoming adequate for the trip after sufficient preparations.

’Not size is the essence” – in my opinion. A ship under 40 feet can be comfortable for 1-2 people, but some like the big sailing ships. The maintenence and operating expenses are double for a large ship. (As an example, the replacement of a large metal part on a large ship costs twice that for a small ship).

The big dividing line is at 50 feet. Over this size one man can handle the ship only with difficulties, in that case an older sailor pair is insufficient when the wind is strong. This is well known and for this reason usually 2-3 crew members are hired (the crew gets no pay, sometimes the food cost is shared).

Used to meet ships under 30 feet. The 28-footers are the smallest ones in use for circumsailing. One person can handle it, maitenence and operating costs are small, they are comfortable, in my opinion: toilet, kitchen, sleeping cabin, salon ..... they have everything, small – but for two, still adequate.

Evening film: Lucky Number Slevin.

March 6, 2008. (Day 529)

Called Bebi Electronics (http://www.bebi-electronics.com/) in the morning, want to buy LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights to replace the normal bulbs (they use less power, I could not operate the mast light the whole night with the normal bulbs).

Went to Lautoka with the #11 bus. The motor mechanic (Dan) is getting married on the 22nd, consequently he fell behind with the work – he has other things, not the motors on his mind J.

Got involved in another motor repair, the repair on my motor will start on Monday morning. The ordered algae killer did not arrive (Reddy Dimond Hardware Limited).

Purchases:

FD12 worth Emerkit (a two-component epoxy), it is used for underwater work;

A few polo shirts and food (oil, milk powder, cereal, candy).

Rain in the afternoon prevented me from working.

After the rain stopped, went to run, did 5 kilometers. Started running regularly from now on.

In the afternoon listned to OSHO speaches from casette tapes: Themes of Our Times, Compassion.

Evening: films – The Island, Doom,

Reading: Cucui – Round Branching.

Early evening walked 3 kilometers, instead of runnig.

Then beer drinking with some of my buddies in their houses. They are farmers, Jim (works in the marina, always helps if asked), his brothers and nephews grow kasawa and marihuana. They like very much this life style – they have no bosses and the work on the fields is not hard.....

Of course, one can meet them too in the Cave in evenings, you can meet everybody there. Who ever counts, is there J.  Then with Filipe and wife, Sam and his girlfriend and a few friends we went to the Cave for a little enjoyment, we found quite a few acquaintances there. The place, as usual, closed at 1 a.m. but then we went to the Zone for a little loosening (after party, the club is open only for the inner circle).

March 8, 2008. (Day 531)

Rain before noon.

Always find birds around my ship. The reason: food scraps, what I put in the cockpit in the evening. According to Hans, they bring luck, he feeds them in this spirit daily. I don’t like the smell of decaying food in the cabin, so I place the items in the cockpit, they go fast in the morning.....

Went swimming and loosening up at the pool at noon. These are the occasions when I meditate, and in addition, swimming too – it can be done J.

Went to run in the afternoon (6 kilometers), then played soccer with the Indians next to the neighboring settlement. (This is part of my physical preparation). They are a soccer team, training daily and are faster than I am, they have no serious technical knowledge. Am no big star in dribbling, but 20-30 I can handle, they can not.

I am here so long that I know most of the local gossip. I know so much about the locals, it seems I am at home. A good example for this is that I know who is the marina manager’s (Mili) lover J. It is a bit of a secret too, because most people don’t know it. I find it interesting that evey Fijian female has a lover.

Evening book: Kurt Vonnegut, Cat’s Cradle (1963):

The ’bokononism’ is a religion of a fictive Caribean island, San Lorenzo Republic’s people as described by Kurt Vonnegut in his book. Bokonon, neé Lionel Boyd Johnson is the founder of the religion, who suffred a shipwreck near San Lorenzo, consequently established the religion on the island.  His family name pronounced by the characteristic accent of the islanders as ’Bokonon’ – the reason for his new name. The holy text of bokononism contained in the ’Book of Bokonon’ constantly updated with explanations and poems by Bokonon. Bokononism is based partly on non-justice, on innocent lies, on other words of commonplaces. Using these methods, the object of the religion is to lead the San Lorezoans suffering in destitution and political dictatorship out of the everydays and provide healing self-misleading ideas for their spiritual wounds. All this is mirroring Vonnegut’s social ideas, according which the human communities are detrermined by the duality of dictatorship and self-delusion, each mutually presume the existence of the other. The conditions on the Isle of San Lorenzo look like this: all of the population follows the teachings of the Bonokon religion, what is attacked with fervor by the holder of the power, the very old dictator, Papa Monzano. Anybody caught practicing the religion is executed by the ’hook method’: he will be put on a gigantic iron hook, pushed though his body. The absurdity of the situation, as elements of all dichotomy: Papa Monzano may supports the popularity of the prophet Bokonon, and the popularity of Bokonon gives legitimacy to Papa Monzano’s bloodthirst. But at the end of the novel it turns out that Papa Monzano is a bokononist. On the other hand, the object of bokononism is to make it obvious that the understanding of the reason of our life is an useless attempt, but we must be aware that God, or the will of the freaky fate ordered us and the people belonging into our karasun (see the expressions of bokononism), on-by-one and together, we are traveling toward this unknown purpose. A bokononist does not believe in free will and never says: „Happened, that.....”, instead, he expresses his belief: „It had to happen that way that......” (see chapter 39). Therefore bokononism is fatalaist, furthermore is a defeatist religion, as defined by the Fourteenth Chapter of the Book of Bokonon: „What can the thinking man hope for humanity, based upon the experiences of the past millions of years?” (Chapter 110).  Thirdly, the teaching of bokononism in the final analysis contains an important chistian element: it encourages us to the undivided and unconditional love for human kind.  As any worthwile religion, bokononism also has genesis history, however, in that theory man has already populated the planet beginning right from its creation. According to this, from the marriage of Sun and Pabu, cold children were born. Borasisi anticipated hot generations, so, in his anger, he threw them away – these became the planets, then turned away Pabu too, who went to live on his favorite child, the Earth populated with people. Bokonon’s explanation for the creation of the World: „Formality! Lie! A heap of formalities!” (chapter 85).

March 9, 2008. (Day 532)

Went to swim and dive for an hour.  It was tide with a pleasant slow current with good visibility. The fish trap was empty, the reason was that I did not check it for 10 days.

Ship painting, applied the last primer layer.

From now on, I keep the old sails in the front compartment (the great and the front sails), where previously the biscuits were stored. Will have less biscuits from now on. Had to wash the sails brecause they were full with ants, having them stored in the shower room....

Took some swimming in the pool in the afternoon, played with Barry the ’stone paper scissors’ game under water with one breath. I invent games like this nowadays J.

Replaced the mast stiffener crossbar to its place plus one-one aluminum crossbar around it for fortification. Will place rags on the ends to avoid rubbing against the sails.

Dined with Judy and Hans in the evening – finally ate something normal. It was a vegetarian menu.

Evening film: The Oil Factor: Behind the War on Terror.

(A film depicting the sad reality, against which we should do something).

I am writing a little about the Yin-Yang because it is a fundamantal symbol, can be seen on the wall of my cabin too.

YIN-YANG I.

The Yin-Yang (simplified Chinese: traditional Chinese: pidgin: yīnyang) dual conception describing in the ancient times already known cosmic powers which despite being positioned on opposite sides, still complement each other and can be found in all static objects or processes of the Universe. This seemingly contradictory, paradoxical approach toward the Chinese philosphy and to the traditional Chinese medical healing represents the multidirectional cornerstone for those. The Chinese Yin – Yang symbol represents the harmonic unity of the World’s division, the affinity and the harmony based upon the balance of the contradictory elements. According to the Chinese philosophy not only the earthly life, but ultimately the existence of the whole Universe is based upon a dualistic principle. The Yin and Yang are two dynamic powers which’ combined co-operation is the origin of everything what comes into existence in the Universe. This concept expressed in pairs: light – darkness; sky – earth; warm – cold, man – woman. Yin connects to the cold, the darkness and wet notion, while the Yang is warm, light, and dry. Yin is tranquil, static, inactive, while Yang is dynamic, active, and expansive. The beginning with the end, the darkness with the light stand in opposition. The daylight is the product of the night. We see the white color only because black exists. The condition of sound is the quiet. The warmth of the summer is followed by the cold of the winter and the death of Nature. One can measure sadness by cheerfulness. These opposites constitute a real and whole unity created by the complementary motion created by the Yin and the Yang. Yin – Yang: Earth - Sky, Moon – Sun, round, oval – square, sharp – dull, woman – man, rest, passive – active, motionless – movement, shadow, dark – light, cold – heat, rain – sunlight, uneven numbers – even numbers, water – mountains, winter – summer, Tiger – Dragon, lazurit – aquarium rosequartz, moonstone, death – life, quiet – noise, velleys, rivers, waters – mountains, elevation.

March 10, 2008 (Day533)

4 months on Fiji.

Link recommendation: http://www.lehetmasapolitika.net/ - (Hungarian) - My answer: NO.

The hobby of 90% of sailors are the repair, upkeep and refurbishing the ship. Virtually every day, but at least 2-3 hours daily are spent on those. Considering that they do nothing the whole day, this has significance. This way they still do something.

Interesting: the Pacific Spirit (a 32-foot ship) was sold for USD37.500 by a 65-year old American who lives for 40 years on the Pacific Ocean.. The first time he crossed the ocean was in 1969...... Now he starts a land life with his wife in Argentina. What could be the reason for this? – he said he got tired of it..... Hans, after 30 years at the age of 76 still did not get tired of it. What is the difference? I know, but it is a secret J.

Shopping in Lautoka in the afternoon - a lot of things, like hazelnut cream, Vegemite, preserves......

Smoothed the primer paint in the afternoon, then the rain started and could not paint the top coat on the ship.

Instead of working, copied the music of Ana on the machine in the Café.  Finally have a Pavarotti! (I like the serious music but until now, had no Pavarotti.)  Then copied the music onto Ana’s machine.

Evening: runnig 6 kilometers, inbetween playing soccer for an hour with my team. Became a team member today. The trainer and the boys are taking it seriously, so must I – the local championship game will take place on Sunday. Warming up and that is needed for training. The discussions are in Indian-English, but there is always somebody who translates for me. To keep up with the 18-22 year old boys is difficult, of course – they are faster. So, I am doing unexpected moves on the field, trying to use some ingenuity, but it is not easy.

Evening films: „What a Way to Go”, „Life at the End of Empire”.

YIN-YANG II.

There are countless theories about the meaning of this peculiar symbol.  Some see a raindrop, others associate it with the tadpole.  In reality the symbol shows the two opposite sides of the World, the contraction of the good and the evil. Neither one can exist without the other, they can not be separated, they can be interpreted only in relation to each other. The unity of the conflicts of the occurrences present in the world is the Yen - Ying. Everything in the World contains the possibility of a change. Consequently, the World consists of the changes of Yin-Yang-like powers. Under normal conditions the powers equalizig each other, they are in equilibrium. Every deed has a good and a bad side. In taoism, this is expressed as the „tai chi”, generally using the Ying -Yang sign. The basis of the taoist belief is the existing continuous equilibrium between the opposites (i.e. something is „under” or „over” – depending on where we are). In accordance with this, any trend to upset this equilibrium can merely be temporary, useless, and a self-destroying experiment. The secret of the success is in the help to re-establish the equilibrium, to allow the good to turn bad, the bad to become better, as the ebb and tide flows, the daytime and the night, the winter and the summer flows from one to the other, and vice-versa. With other words: the wise understands the reality of the good and the bad, while the foolish concentrates on the concept of the good and bad. The wise knows that whatever presently bad will be followed by a new good, while the foolish undertakes an eternal pursuit in trying to exterminate the bad. In our system of thinking similarly to the the buddhist „Suniata ~ emptiness”, the good and the bad is merely conceptual abstraction which have no permanent, independent existence. The Yin and Yang expressoions appear in the first time in „Yi King” – the Book of Changes in about 1250.  The meaning of Yin is the shadowy side of the mountain, the Yang sign means the sunny side. These pictograms not only depict the forms in a total juxtaposition, but at the same time express the transformation from one extreme to the other, like the changes of the seasons of the year.

March 11, 2008. (Day 534)

Went to Lautoka in the moring. Was from 8:30 to 11:30 at the motor mechanic to get the repair moving. Completely disassembled the motor, one of the cylinders did not work, the other was completely covered with black soot.

Lunch at a vegetarian Indian restaurant (FD3.1): Idilli, Dhokara, Saina, Bread Pakora.

Idilli recipe: rice powder (plus salt) cooking in boiling water (smaller balls/oval forms);

Idilli sauce: coconut shavings, garlic, salt, ginger;

Saina: dalo leaves, garlic, chili, salt, saina base.

Afternoon purchases:

2 energy drinks (skaskora, guarana+taurin, guarana+ginseng+vitamine B) - FD2.5 per piece;

Promite (vegetable extract spread, www.promite.com.au) – FD12;

200 grams date -

LED lamp – FD70;

A small LED lamp is good to have on the ship what I bought on Tahiti – have a small blinking lamp too. This is now serious, the parameters: 1.2 Mega candle power / 1 Watt Luxeon / Weatherproof / LED bulb – I can charge its battery from the cigarette lighter socket (and of course from 220 Volts).

The LED mast lamp arrived I ordered last week

Late afternoon: 7 kilometers running and soccer playing for an hour with the team. Have to work hard to be a real team member. 1-2 good playes still did not accept me. Just like at home, it takes a few weeks before they accept you. This means I get fewer passes.

Evening: banana preserve cooking – unfortunately fell asleep and it burned. Could save only less than a half kilo, but it tasted really good.

YIN-YANG III.

Ancient Chinese wisdom states that the merging of Yin and Yang creates the life emergy – chi. The Yin and theYang are the two powers which move the World and their existence, one without the other, is senseless. There is no light without shadow and there is no shadow without light. The symbol of the taoist philisophy is the Yin -Yang Circle, symbolizing the equilibrium of the opposite powers which maintain the World. To achieve completeness and harmony, the Yin -Yang power duo must be in equilibrium, because if this condition changes, problems will arise – sadness and grief. Of course, life is not just black and white – the black Yin symbol contains the Yang in the form of a white dot, ad the Yang likewise carries the Yin germ. Not only the outer equilibrium must be found between soft and hard, round and square, dark and light, woman and man, but our inner equilibrium between the Yin and Yang energies as well. Women must seek equilibriun not only with men, but with ourselves also – beside female energies, we contain male energies also, and we have to find harmony between those. The suppression, the lack of acceptance of ourselves, that is, can bring a tormented, unhappy life for us. Love starts with the inner peace and with the desire for the opposite pole, not with an external miracle, upon which we have no effect. The love between a man and a woman – as any other relation – appears as the relation between the two opposite poles (Yin and Yang). These two energies simultaneously aid and moderate each other. The prerequisite for a complete and perfect love is the equilibrium between the two operating powers.

March 12, 2008 (Day 535)

Got up early morning - there is work to be done!

Removed a small fixture from the ship, the original fastener for the bimini – have no bimini. This place always leaked water – will fix it with epoxy;

Tying rags these days to the mast stabilizer crossbar to avoid damage to the sails;

Arranging and categorizing of the clothing: 1. never wore it, 2. in good condition, 3. acceptable, 4. working polo.

Almost the whole day burnishing and painting the ship – top coat. Applied the paint mainly to and around the side slats beacause that is the place where the old primer and coat came off. Found other peelings too, painting them over continuously;

Painted the bottom of the cockpit which is a rotting board J.

Late afternoon: running 7 kilometers, then play soccer with my team. Shot a goal, this was the first one. My position was midfield attack. Started to accept me more, but is difficult, because I speak no Indian. Everybody speaks English, of course, but using the Hindi more – hopefully something will stick to me J. They are faster and more technically inclined, but occasionally I have some lauck too J.

Was in the company of the security guys in the evening. Later went to the Baloo1 salon with Gerhard and Elisabeth for a little beer drinking. Gave me a lot of ship/pilot guide books around the world - and music.

YIN-YANG IV.

The origin of the Yin -Yang symbol could be found in the ancient Chinese wold view where the changes of the environment, the creation of the world was described with abstract symbols. According this, originally there was a „great emptyness”, as the symbol of the completeness and  purity of nature.

The life energy permeating the Universe was born of of the constant transformation, dynamic tension of the merging of the Yin -Yang energies. Both give space to the other, since both contain part of the other: in the the black „drop’, the white dot is present, while in the white, the small black part is contained. The name of the circle in Yang is „Yin-in-Yang”, while the Yin circle is „Yang-in-Yin”. All life originates in them, both are present in all what exists. The World – we can say – consists of the constant changing of the Yin -Yang-like powers. Neither can exist without the other, since they keep each other in motion. In the Book of Changes – the I Ching, or you can meet with it in the Yi-king, what was created by king Wen – Yin means the white side, Yang the black one.

The Yin is portrayed by a line with a gap in the middle, the Yang as a continuous line.

Comparing animals with plants, the animals represent the Yang, the plants the Yin energy. Why? Because the animals are in motion, while the plants are not, relatively speaking. But if we compare the plants with stones, then the plant will be the Yang energy and the stone the Yin, because the plant is alive, the rock is not.

For this reason it is an error if we simplify the notion of Yin and Yang to a good-bad, white-black proposition. In the table below you will find several examples from which you may understand the mutual actions of Yin and Yang. This is, as you could see in the examples described above, is relative.

The Yin and Yang are a constantly changing combination: daytime is followed by night, the Moon is exchanged by the Sun, the spring by the summer, the fall is overtaken by winter, the fluid solidifies, the exhaling is followed by the inhaling, and there is no light without shadow. Basically, our life’s disharmony can be traced back to the uneven distribution of Yin and Yang. The same happens when we get sick for istance, because we overdrove ourselves. But the equilibrium can also be upset if we do not move enough.

March 13, 2008. (Day 536)

Tommy, the diving center chief took me to Lautoka in the morning. Went to the Immigration Office, FD93 was the price of the visa extension (after 4 months, I can get a 2 month extended visum). After this I went to the Local Bureau District Office where obtained a sailing permit to the Western Islands. The permit stipulated that I can take local citizens with me, but no tourists. Then I proceeded to the Post Office. The package arrived: one of my friends, Poór Jóska sent me his new book. It arrived on the 2nd of January to Lautoka, but they mixed it up in the marina, only the second inquiry produced it, was almost sent back.

Went for paint in the RD, then to the motor mechanic. The project stagnated and will not get started until Tuesday next week. Maybe we will be able to finish it together. Bought pineapple – will make preserve from it.

Lunch: Vegetarian restaurant. Spiced yoghurt juice; piesam: milk, sugar, suttana, sao seeds; Bhaia – snack; 2 roti khata with zhaji (onion, chili, spinach, eggplant); chutney (coriander leaf, chili, onion, garlick); pickle: special vegetable in hot sauce.

Purchases: Hazel nut, pear and strawberry preserves (always buy on sale :-).

Afternoon: Went to Ruben in Banaras.

Copied music to my machine: Cesarea Evore (Cape Verde), Pavarotti, Salif Keita, Tinariwen (Sahara), Afropea (Telling stories to the sea), Debussy, Dub side of the moon (regge) – and other regge music.

Drank coffe the whole evening with the usual neighboring crowd.

The conversation always starts like this, the end is of course different:

-         From where did you start?

-         Koper, Slovenia.

-         Where is it?

-         Europe.

-         Near Russia?

-         No.

-         ................

Rambitu is a farmer who rented 10 acres for 30 years for FD10.000.  He is a sugar cane and marihuana farmer. Never left Fiji.

Watched Israel Vibration in Holyland, Ghiemse Raggae koncerts on my machine, then a document film on Civilization.

The common opinion of half-kas is that it tastes like coffe and milk mixture, of course the milk-and- coffe is the best.

I slept at Ruben’s in Banaras.

YIN-YANG V.

The primary symbol of the taoist religion is the Yin -Yang circle (taj-ki). It also plays a significant rôle in certain branches of Confucianism. According the tao two opposing forces create and direct everything in the Universe. They consider the Heavenly Might simultaneously as male and female, what the taoist T’ai Chie depict as a curved line dividing a circle into white and black halves. The Yin is negative and passive power represented by the female principle of the black color; the Yang is positive and active power, symbolized by the white color of manhood. Yin symbolizes the soul, the wetness, the cold, the night, the Moon, the darkness, the Earth, associated with the broken line. Yang is the spirit, the light, the daylight, the Sun, the Creation, the symbol of dynamism associated with the unbroken line. The effects of Yin and Yeng can be sensed in the changing of the seasons, and actually in the whole order of Nature. Harmony can only be materialized if the equilibrium of the two forces are balanced. The Yin -Yang circle supports this thought. The two parts are divided by the curved line suggesting dynamism. Both parts contain a dot from the other color indicating that the male-principle and the female-principle do not exist alone, only in a mutual effect.

March 14, 2008. (Day 537)

Had my breakfast at Ruben, he makes the bread with honey well. There are always friends at his place, one thinks this as a continuous home party J. After a little chat took the bus back to the marina.

Afternoon:

1. Attached a new hinge to the bottom of the cockpit, so I can secure it (see the picture museum);

2. Affixed rags to the ends of the mast stabilizer crossbar – this is important to protect the sails;

Spent an hour in the pool with Barry and his father – chatting, loosening up;

After running 7 kilometers, one hour soccer with the Indian team.

Evening:

Made pineapple preserve, made drinks from the juice.

Film: The Tattooist (I am interested in the subjects involving tattoo. The film showed mostly the Samoan tattoos.) Was no net in the marina, could not get on.

Human rights embody the fudamental values of human civilisations:

The people are different, and so are their cultures.

People speak in a varienty of languages.

People are guided by different reilgions.

The people are born in different colours,

And many traditions influence their

Lives with varying colors and shades…

But despite these differences,

All people have one single common

Attribute. They are all human beings

nothing more, nothing less.

March 15, 2008. (Day 538)

I always felt a special kind of connection with ships. With CARINA, of course, this kind of connection is much deeper. I think that if the captain is sensitive enough, he can sense this what means really the connection on the spiritual plane. A little like a marriage, in that case a divorce – the selling of the ship is difficult and is virtually impossible.

Burnished the ship from morning till evening, applied the last top coat (Gloss 343). Sewed up my sleeping bag. Ran 4 kilometers but due to the strong rain, did not go to the field. Got acquainted with Lulu, who is a 23 year old farmer near the marina. Later on I played card with Suzy, Bobby and Barry. At night we went with Barry and with a few locals to the Cave for a little partying.

March 16, 2008. (Day 539)

”Nor law, nor duty bade me fight,

Nor public men, nor cheering crowds,

A lonely impulse of delight

Drove to this tumult in the clouds. ”

William Butler Yeats

Went to the soccer field, but at 11 they were still setting up the tent. So, I went to Ruben’s for lunch, he invited me earlier. Fresh water oysters, lolo (covered with coconut cream), plus a few other desserts. Drank a little beer but afer 3 started back to the Bazaar. Unfortunately missed the soccer, got there only at the end.

Late afternon picked coconut on the strand for preserve, broke them open, carved out pieces and cut them into small pieces.

Evening: coconut preserve cooking. Of course, I tried the compote and the syrup versions as well. If the ship were bigger, I would place a larger emphasis on cooking preserves, but here I have no place for storing several preserve bottles.

The coconut preserve is really the ensemble of sweet coconut pieces swimming in sugary coco oil. Taste good, but not much of a preserve constitution.

Copied music at night to the machine.

March 17, 2008. (Day540)

Before and after noon:

Applied epoxy to the hinge under the cockpit, to the middle bed and to a lamp;

Sharpened, cleaned and lubricated the harpoon;

Sharpened the knives;

Letter fixing on the boat – half the letter ’H’ was missing;

Motor holding screw locations cleaning.

Possible places for the radar reflector:

1. The rear mast stabilizer rope (the usual place, but it would not be high enough, would endanger the

    large sail);

2. The front mast stabilizer rope (it may interferes with the front sail);

3. On top (lends itself to a difficult solution);

4. The largeside stiffener (maybe the best solution over the crossbar height);

5. The smallside stiffener (the original place – not high enough and interferes with the large sail).

So, it will be higher than before (it gives a stronger signal on the radar) and presents less interference

to the large sail. (Glued polyfoam to the edges of the reflector to protect the sail).

Dinner: coconut-in-rice –an absolute invention of mine.

At times of serious talks, sometimes asking me of my background and the reason. My connection with the ocean is also an interst to people. Spiritually more opinions exists. Summrizing in short, I like the ocean. Part of the sailors are afraid of the ocean, like Bobby, he is very cautious for that reason – which is advantageous – they say things like „the ocean wants to kill me”.  Some time later I wil write about this in length.

March 18, 2008. (Day 541)

March 19, 2008. (Day 542)

The radish seeds completely germinated. Hans advice worked concerning germination (i.e. plastic preserve bottle covered over with mosquito screen, for instance, laying on side. Consequently my breakfast was noodles with  radish germ.

Took the morning bus to Lautoka. The motor is about OK, but the starter motor does not work. It was OK when I took the motor to the shop in February. Therefore it got damaged in the shop.....Dan promised that he will fix it. As a result, the time of putting the boat on the water bercame uncertain. When will my motor be OK?

Purchases:

1 kilogram washing powder – FD3.7;

A few small items: plastic box, trash bags (for watertight packing);

2 kilograms papaya (will make preserve with it) – FD3;

1 used anode (Nationwide and the Ba Motorsba did not have it, found a faily good one at the Offshore

   Marina mechanic. At the marina shop or at Yamaha it would be expensive.) – FD4.

Went to Kasmir with bus in the afternoon to visit Sam and Sai.

Evening: cooked papaya preserve. Started to germiante the sunflower seeds today. Got some Fiji music  from Ilias, copied them to the machine.

Watched Travolta films in the evening.

March 20, 2008. (Day 543)

Fiji weather: www.nadraki.com

Was raining the whole day, could not work. Sewed my torn clothes, cleaned.

Before noon watched a film: The Illusionist, and got together with my buddies (the marina workers).

In the Afternoon went up to the main road where I met with Asisi – gave me a 220 Volt laptop cable.

Unfortunately he had no time  for testing. The connector was not good for the machine –fixed it the next morning.

In the evening went to Bobby for a chat, his girlfriend Suzy is also here now, she is a police woman in London.

March 21, 2008. (Day 544)

Replaced the steering with Barry in the morning, then bolted the metal parts belonging to the skeg. Affixed the radar reflector to the big side stiffener and the mast top.

The new computer power supply 220V – 18.5V, gives only 12 Volts. Don’t understand what the problem is, sent an SMS to the service, but of course, they did not answer.

Then I soldered 2 cables for the new LED lamp (plus vulcanizing band) to the mast top. (Will have to treat this part with fiberglass tomorrow.)

Afternoon:

Glued back my shoe sole J, it fell off during playing soccer;

Polished the steering rod but could not apply the lacker because started to rain;

It can rain – went swimming to the pool, met a few sailors as always – had a nice talk with Barry.

I like the rain because I  don’t have to work and can go to the pool for a little loosening.

Evening movie in the Yacht Club: Death of The Funeral.

Osho: My declaration of Human Rights... reading his writing, of course I agree with him.

March 22, 2008. (Day 545)

Ran out of the biscuits from Hungary. I was eating them until now, hardly ate bread.

Fixed the mast light with epoxy and glass fiber. Then reviewed everything once more. Started the installation of the mast, Barry helped.

Purchased vegetable in the afternoon: toroi, okra, sumusumu, and some minor items for the holiday lunch tomorrow in Lautoka. The Indians had a bazaar/festival the whole day today in Lautoka in the large park.

With a conceited thought I established that I arrived to the level where I am not only cook the Fiji food, but improved it J.

Then in the evenng I went to Ruben’s in Baranas.

One of the conversaton items: what did the TV on Fiji? They were not prepared for it culturally ..... religion took the back seat and the youth copies everything from the tube. Everything got turned upside-down..

Evening film: Sicko (Michael Moore).

In short: 50 million Americans have no medical insurance. The health system looks only at the money, not the people.

Who is the „intersting” man for me?

For instance Paul Coleman, the 53 year old nature protector activist. „World Wide Walker”: walked more than 27.000 miles, touched 39 countries in 19 years without money.

”Every day something hurts when you are carrying 20 kilo backpacks and walking up to 40 km.” ”But when there’s thousands of people cheering you on, it gives you the strength to continue.” ”I carry on every day because I love this planet. I know what’s happening to it environmentally, in terms of global warming, deforestation, the devastation of the oceans. Spreading the message is the least I can do, and the most I can do. ”

http://www.earthwalker.com/

The mission: By walking the Planet, I deliver a message of the need to preserve the life of our beautiful Earth and through my actions encourage people to become involved. As well I have set myself a goal of seeing one hundred million trees planted; one tree for every man, woman, and child killed in the last century of war. I`ve experieced war and know its terrible consequences, not only on humanity but also on the natural environment that we all need to exist.

It`s time to stop the killing and start the surviving. Time to put our human resources into living upon the land in sustainability and harmony with the natural environment. Time to develop a global respect for all life. And time to invest the energy and money spent on war, into creating a new world.
