10.01 (8th day)

The tie-up fee was 10 euros in Penna harbor – will stay as long as I feel like.  Very friendly, nice harbor, I can recommend it to everybody.

     Last night I ate from the local specialties of Vasta – next to each buffet they are frying the sausages made from different meat on hot coal.  Then continued the meal on the ship too.  The menu: brown rice and everything what can be put in it (curry, sausage, onion, garlic, paprika).  Made enough for two days from a 1/2 kg. of rice.

     Started out at 7 in the morning - wanted to start at 6, but I slipped a bit.  Fortunately I don't have to hurry to anywhereJ.  A few hours of total calm weather prevailed after morning, I could sleep well during this time.  Used the calm weather to gather a little energy by a good sleep.  A comfortable Bf.1 started to blow around noon, but from 120 – should go 98.  So I just meander around.  In cases like this, I can set Carina to sail by herself.  I feel good; take photos, video and even sound recordings.  The reason for this is the fine cereal in the morning.  For an unknown reason, my fingernails and my hair grow slower on the ship (but my beard faster…).

     A few issues: sea sickness.  Basically I do not have it. I am already on the ocean for a month with Carina, had time to acclimatize.  In times of storms, it is bad to stay in the cabin – a small ship is tossed much more by the sea than a bigger one.

Relaxing:  there are days when I don't have to guide the ship since the wind and the current cooperate in setting Carina to hold the right direction.  These are times to read the Bible.  Recommend it to everyone!  One can understand it better when alone, removed from the world, sailing far away with a small ship.

Fishing:  dictated by necessity.  Do not fish until I have to because I love animals and have enough respect for life not to kill for fun.

     Liquids:  the first few days did not drink enough because did not have time.  Forgot to eat and drink.  The other reason was that I was reluctant to pee due to the big wind.  It is quite difficult to pee on a constantly rolling ship – you either mess up yourself or a big wave or two gets you. Nowadays everything is OK.  Have a nightpot again and like to drink too because 1 or 2 champagne pills make a very good drink.

     Sleeping:  this is an absolute central problem with me.  At times I feel I could fall asleep anytime.  My method is: more frequently in smaller installments.  Could sleep today very well.  The wind was mild and there was no frequent ship traffic – I had an affair with a fishing ship only once.  I rater sleep early mornings or at daytime, but at night I have to watch the ship traffic.

     Gymnastics on the ship: I am feeling that am not doing it.  Have room for a few exercises, but not enough for others.  Forgetting about it and becoming a little lazy, but I will correct that.

10.02 (9th day) (41-57.0N; 015-12.3E)

     We are sailing with a 1-1/2 knot speed due to the weak wind toward Viessa.  It is the next larger city, we left Termolit last night.  Carina was put on the water one month ago in Koper – therefore we celebrate today!!

     One problem is that it is already October, and it is better if one starts out sooner.  Have the feel that I am lagging behind.  Should have started in the middle of September, but then I could not have tested the ship sufficiently.

     No wind in the afternoon – reading the book by József Varsányi: 'Around the World with Zsuzsanna'.   József Poór sent it to me from Northern Hungary in August.   Varsányi sailed around the world the same route I am doing now.  They started at the end of October from Rijeka and used the motor a lot…..and of course, did not have a lot of good weather on the Mediterranean.  Don't know why, but a large number of small, fruit-fly like insects appear from-time-to-time.  I am afraid to find out where they are coming from.

     The night was quiet.  Could sleep, one or two fishing vessels passed by close, but did not have to make corrections in direction.  Fortunately there were no dangerous situations.

10.03 (10th day) (42-02.4N; 015-46.7E)

Could radio today on 14.290 and 7.060 MHz.  It was good to hear the voices again of Gyuri (G0EJG), Tibi (HA5APK), and Karesz (HA5CAR).  Some nasty

Russian hams created bad interference, though…. Sailing now for 3 days in weak winds, traveling at 1 knot to 140 degrees.  Used the motor for less than an hour to charge the battery.  The wind picked up around evening – about a Bf.5, a bit too strong for a ship like this.  It was a damp voyage, slept in the water-tights and tied in safe again.  It was discouraging that the whole night had to travel on big, 4-meter waves and due to the strong wind I was just going around in circles.  This ship was not built to go in circles – but I knew this all along.

10.04 (11th day)

Did not try to radio – too strong wind and too big waves.   In the morning I ate the last of the home cookies which did not spoil.

     Technical problems:

-         The side of the ship is leaking with a consequence that some of my papers got soak wet;

-         The front cabin also leaks despite my re-insulating on Penna;

-         The rudder immobilizer fixture fell out again, although I glued in well in Penna (will use plastic material);

-          One of the fixtures of  the boom got bent and loosened (this is a bigger problem, but in my opinion I can fix it);

-         The other point of the radar reflector loosened, it rubs against the jib (developed system for this and it is working).

Discovered in the morning that after sailing the whole night, just drifted, and not proceeded.  (The

reason for this was that I under-sailed the ship at quarter sail.

     Tied up at 4 at Viessa, waiting for the ideal wind and to allow me to correct some of the problems of the ship (41-53.1N; 016-11.6E).   Had time to look around in town.
